CSU agricultural sciences faculty are engaged in research related to animal environmental systems, managed ecosystems, environmental soil science, organic agriculture, science and management of plant pathogens and insect pests, and many other areas related to sustainability and the environment.
High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety
The High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety focuses on the rural environment with research projects related to industrial hygiene, air quality, water quality, and agricultural health.
Institute for Livestock and the Environment
An institute at Colorado State University is focused on solving problems between livestock production and science-based environmental management. The Institute for Livestock and the Environment is bringing together several groups from various disciplines across the CSU campus to balance issues of economic growth in the livestock industry with the environment, which is a key component to achieving sustainable rural communities. The institute has four objectives: assess the environmental, economic and social impacts of livestock production; develop viable management practices and tools to reduce impacts; gather information on public and livestock producer support of management practices; advise producers and inform policy makers.
Organic Agriculture Program
CSU’s Organic Agriculture Program, earned a perfect score for the quality and breadth of its teaching, research and outreach from a leading industry foundation that evaluated similar programs at land-grant universities nationwide.
The Interdisciplinary Minor in Organic Agriculture, established in 2005, exemplifies the university’s sustainability focus. The Organic Agriculture Program benefits from frequent interaction with industry partners; from northern Colorado’s vibrant farmers market scene; and from University resources, including expert faculty and gardens designed for teaching and research.
The Western Center for Integrated Resource Management (WCIRM)
This program affords its students a unique opportunity to gain a diverse agricultural education through classroom and hands-on sessions. WCIRM offers a Master of Agricultural Sciences degree utilizing contributing faculty from the College of Agricultural Sciences, the Warner College of Natural Resources and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The long term goal of WCIRM is to “improve the competitive position and sustainability of independent livestock producers and the economic and environmental health of rural communities.”
